Our Story
In 1729, two famous rum smugglers whose names were lost to history were transporting rum across the coast of South Carolina. The captain of a local militia had caught wind of their plan to move the liquor and shipped out to capture the rum smugglers and their loot. The captain pursued the ship in order to steal the rum and properly tax it. Afraid their famous rum would fall into the hands of the feds, the rum smugglers pushed their barrels into the sea, which they assumed they’d later be able to find. The story goes that they were never able to recover their rum. The ship was found in 1936 off the coast of Charleston, but the rum was never found… that is, until 2018…
In 2018, our founders were boating off the coast, when their depth finder found something strange. They dropped anchor and free dove to the bottom of the ocean to retrieve the anomaly. When they found the barrel at the bottom of the ocean, it had been completely intact. They pulled it to the shore, used a crowbar to pry it open, and they each were surprised to find rum inside. Our founders cupped their hands together and each took a sip of the rum. They were taken aback by the sweet flavor of the rum. The liquor had been kissed by the saltwater, which cut the bitterness and brought out the sweeter notes of the rum.
